Crate Size Guide: What Size Does Your Puppy Actually Need?

Picking a crate by your puppy's current size is the most common new-owner mistake. Here's how to size for their adult weight instead — with real numbers for the breeds we raise.

The single most common mistake new puppy owners make is buying a crate that fits their puppy *today* instead of the dog they'll grow into. Buy for adult size, then use a divider panel to shrink the space while they're small — that's how professional trainers do it, and it's how successful house-training actually works.

Why sizing matters for house-training

A crate that's too big lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in the other, which defeats the entire purpose of crate training. A crate that's correctly sized (or divided down) gives them just enough room to stand, turn around, and lie down — nothing more. That discomfort with mess right next to where they sleep is what builds bladder control.

Sizing by breed we raise

  • Pomeranian Shih Tzu mix (Shiranian), adult weight ~5-9 lbs: a size M crate (about 63×46×62cm) is plenty, and most pups this size are comfortable in it for life — no need to upsize.
  • Doberman Pinscher, adult weight 60-100 lbs: start with a divider in a size 2XL crate (about 105×80×96cm); by 6 months most Dobermans need the full space.
  • Husky, adult weight 35-60 lbs: a size XL crate (about 95×65×84cm) fits most adult Huskies comfortably.

The divider panel trick

Rather than buying three crates as your puppy grows, buy the adult-size crate up front and use a wire or plastic divider panel to section off extra space. Move the divider back every few weeks as they grow. This is the single best money-saving tip we give every new owner.

What to put inside

Keep it minimal at first — a washable crate mat and nothing else. Bedding, blankets, and soft toys can be chew hazards until you know your puppy's habits. Add them gradually once you've seen how they behave when left alone.
